Cross-Country - Skiing that's Free-ing!

Cross Country Skiing

One of the most picturesque scenes in the Mount Washington Valley is of the covered bridge in Jackson, NH on Route 16. This time of year, more often than not, you'll see cross country skiers gliding over the landscape.

My thought has always been "why?" I truly could not grasp the joy of shuffling on skies without the exhilaration of the downhill adrenaline rush. The closest I've come to XC skiing is crossing from Bear Peak to Attitash. If you don't get enough speed up - it's agony!

However, after hearing from my co-workers who LOVE XC skiing - I think I'll give it a go. Plus, it appeals to two of my strongest passions - staying in shape and saving money.

I've been told it's peaceful and restorative for your soul. It's also a fantastic way to keep in shape.

According to an article on WebMD, Cross-Country Skiing tops the list of the best 5 winter sports for health and fitness.

A 150 pound person can burn between 500 - 650 calories per hour. Not only can you build muscle mass, endurance and balance by cruising on skis - but it's good for your soul as well. Getting outdoors can really chase the winter blues away.

As for me, I'm going to give it a chance.
